The Alabama Dept. of Archives and History collects and preserves records and artifacts that document the history of the state. Prior to 1981 the department maintained numerous vertical files that were created by various divisions within the department. The subjects and content of these vertical files were determined by countless individuals employed by the department from ca. 1901 to 1981. This artificial series consists of an index to state and local officials who served between ca. 1819 and ca. 1920. The index was probably compiled by Thomas M. Owen, the department's first director. The 5 x 8-inch index cards contain the name of the individual, the position to which he was appointed, the date of the appointment or commission, and the source of the information. Appointments or commissions to the state militia are included.
